Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Fly to Kisoro – Transfer to Lake Mutanda
Your journey begins with a scheduled domestic flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip, located in Uganda’s southwestern highlands near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This scenic flight takes approximately 1.5 hours and offers breathtaking aerial views of Uganda’s rolling hills, lush forests, and scattered crater lakes. Upon arrival in Kisoro, you will be met by your private driver-guide who will transfer you by 4x4 vehicle to your luxury lodge perched on the shores of Lake Mutanda a sparkling, island-dotted lake set against the stunning backdrop of the Virunga volcano range.
After checking into your luxury accommodation either the tranquil Mutanda Lake Resort, the uniquely designed Chameleon Hill Lodge, or the exclusive Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (optional upgrade), you will have the afternoon at leisure. Relax with a chilled welcome drink, explore the beautifully landscaped grounds, or opt for a gentle canoe ride across Lake Mutanda’s calm waters. The lake’s volcanic islets and birdlife create a perfect prelude to the raw wilderness experience to come. In the evening, enjoy a gourmet dinner with panoramic sunset views over the Virunga Mountains.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After an early breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the nearby Rushaga or Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered mountain gorilla. At the park headquarters, you’ll attend a comprehensive briefing led by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, who will explain gorilla behavior, conservation efforts, and trekking protocols. You will then be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level and group size.
The gorilla trek itself is an exhilarating experience that can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location. The trek winds through dense montane forest, across streams, and up steep, muddy slopes each step heightening the anticipation. Once the gorillas are located, you are allowed to spend a magical hour in their presence, quietly observing their social behaviors, listening to their vocalizations, and marvelling at their gentle nature and human-like interactions. It is a humbling, emotional, and often life-changing encounter.
Following your trek, return to the lodge for a hot shower, a well-earned lunch, and time to rest. In the late afternoon, you may choose to enjoy a massage, take in the lakeside serenity, or participate in an optional visit to a nearby Batwa pygmy community, where you can learn about traditional forest-dwelling lifestyles and support local culture. Dinner is served at your lodge, accompanied by storytelling or a crackling fire under the stars.

Later, you might opt for a guided walk or short hike through nearby villages, banana plantations, or terraced hills, offering insight into rural Ugandan life. More active travelers can hike up to Lake Bunyonyi viewpoint for another perspective of the Kigezi highlands. Alternatively, remain at the lodge and indulge in a spa treatment, take a dip in the natural surroundings, or simply relax with a book and a glass of wine by the fireplace.
